All children have a daily English lesson. English is also taught through other subjects as part of our cross curricular topics.
Our approach to the teaching of reading is through group guided reading in class but there are also individual programmes for children who have not yet achieved at least an average standard in reading. Phonics is formally taught through class lessons in Years EYFS,1 and 2.
We use a range of resources including Floppy’s Phonics to deliver letters and sounds. Our reading schemes are mainly Oxford Reading Tree and Project X with a wider variety of graded texts for the more able reader.
All children are taught spelling, grammar and punctuation. The school has an agreed approach to the teaching of writing known as ‘guided writing.’ Talk for writing is also followed which develops children’s language and story telling skills.
